Hi everyone,

A few weeks ago I was giving an MF party. One of my relatives is pregnant, and so (understandably) didn't want to risk using it. WebMD does not have any info either way, and I reassured her that there has never been a side effect (that we know of). I thought people should post if they had any NEGATIVE side effects, for the sake of everyone else. Also, it might be helpful to post some of your known allergies, maybe we could find a correlation.

Hi Arjibuh,
I have not heard of any negative side effects from Miracle fruit other than some people say it makes there mouth feel funny. I was at a show in May this year and it was interesting to watch everyones reaction to the berry, it seems to me that the the degree of how sweet things are made from mf vary widely. Some people saw little change (very few) and some people had just the opposite effect and the lemons were to sweet. The vast majority were just somewhere in the middle. I guess I gave around 50 samples out that day. Some people were scared to try at all which really is funny because nothing is more natural than Miracle fruit. If they had any idea what was in that hot dog they ate on the 4th of July they would run away screaming.

I personally have never had any side effects, but at the very least if you have allergies and haven't had any reactions I think that would help also. My brother is allergic to tree nuts (cashews, pecans, macadamia) and many types of citrus, and he hasn't had any problems.

Good call on that.

Although common sense would imply they are not related, my wife is deathly allergic to flax and kiwi, and some nuts and slightly lactose. She has had no adverse side effects.

Miracle fruit has no known adverse side effects. Western civilization has known about the fruit for over 275 years; no harmful side effects have been reported.
Miracle fruit tablets have been tested and approved for sale by Japan's Ministry of Health, a government organization comparable to the United States FDA.

Can't hurt to list if you have ever had any problems. Common sense would say allergies with different foods wouldn't show anything, but more foods are related than the average person thinks.

Yes, I understand, and I reassured her there was nothing wrong. However, being as their have not been any reported feedback either way, I thought it would be nice to report something if someone found something. For the past 275 years it has been basically in the closet, and now it is out. Numbers wise, I think more people are using it now then probably all history combined, including Japan, Europe and the US. So, the likelihood we will find something is higher. So if anyone wants to post their negative experiences, please do.

It won't have any adverse effects on a pregnant woman.

I agree, I don't see why it would. But no offense, "a guy from miracletaste said so" isn't enough authority to convince her, or my wife (who is now also pregnant). Honestly, can we really know that without testing? On a wide scale? I understand glycoproteins are harmless, but what about other ingredients? I think it highly unlikely, but I am willing to accept someones testimony to the contrary. I would also not recomend it if pregnant, and my wife and I have agreed.

How could a plant substance which taken normally have side effects?  I think it is weird logic personally.  We are ingesting so many chemicals daily in terms of pesticides, growth hormones in our food, pollution from cars , but that is not given a second thought?  But we are afraid of a berry which makes things taste different.  I just find it strange.

No, No one is afraid. Sheesh. I am just saying, if anyone notices anything, let us know. My wife is deathly allergic to Kiwi. Kiwi? It's very random, but allergies are sometimes. Pregnant women are allowed to be paranoid about the unknown, but no one is saying we are worried overall. You ask how a plant substance taken normally could have side effects, but there are thousands of side effects to thousands of plants. Like Rhubarb? Don't eat the leaf!

Definitely we don't eat most plants!  I was just saying that the sensitivies that an unborn child may have to substances would probably also be towards the chemicals in our foods.

But there is one BIG reason not to eat the miracle fruit with sour food, the unborn baby will have to live with the consequences.  The glass of vinegar (little extreme) may taste great, but the baby suffers from too much pungent & spicy foods.

The older cultures encourage women to eat simple foods during pregnancy so the child doesn't suffer.

Best of luck with the pregnancy!

some people say that their mouth feels funny after eating the berry? this got me thinking, because when i eat bananas, my mouth feels like its stinging or irritated. its not like after eating a lot of sour things. my mouth will feel like this for up to a 1/2 an hour after consumption. i went to my allergy specialist, and decided to bring this up. he asked me if i was allergic to golden rod. i am very allergic to golden rod. he said bananas have a similar protein almost identical of golden rod in them. he said not many people experience it, but its most common with bananas and even apples. he said it is a completely harmless effect, and is just topical. he said that proteins once in the stomach get broken down in such a way that it causes no harm. this is why people can swallow snake poison or suck it out of wounds, because once in the stomach, the proteins that cause the reaction if injected into the blood stream, are broken down in the stomach. i love bananas and continue to eat them. sometimes i might have to suck on an ice cube afterward. but its always been just a nuisance. this leads me to believe that its possible that miraculin, or another protein in miracal fruit is causing the same effect in the mouth. hope this sheds some light!
